President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, enabling him to consolidate key reforms and oversee a smooth leadership transition within the Service.

Adeniyi’s current tenure, which was expected to expire on August 1, 2026, has now been extended until February 2027.

The extension is aimed at allowing the Customs chief to complete the implementation of the National Single Window initiative, a major trade facilitation reform designed to streamline cargo clearance processes and enhance efficiency in international trade.

During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to ensure the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, while also overseeing the mandatory retirement of officers who have attained the age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

The move is also intended to guarantee an orderly succession process and maintain institutional stability within the Service.

Adeniyi began his career in the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

In June 2023, President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs, a position from which he has spearheaded several modernization and revenue-enhancement initiatives aimed at strengthening the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The six-month extension is expected to provide the Customs boss with the opportunity to consolidate ongoing reforms while laying the groundwork for a seamless transfer of leadership at the expiration of his tenure in February 2027.
