By Nkechi Eze

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank following his appointment as Acting Inspector-General of Police, less than 24 hours after he succeeded Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing personal reasons.

Disu’s decoration marked the formal commencement of his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at a critical period for the country’s internal security management.

Before his elevation, Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, was serving at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, where he had been deployed barely two weeks earlier as part of efforts to strengthen nationwide crime-fighting operations.

The brief but symbolic ceremony was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and was attended by senior ministers and top government functionaries, underscoring the significance of the leadership transition within the police hierarchy.

Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission has reportedly compiled a list of 35 senior police officers for compulsory retirement, including eight Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, in connection with the ongoing leadership changes triggered by Egbetokun’s exit.

The planned retirements are believed to be part of efforts to restructure the Force’s top command and align it with the new leadership.

Disu is expected to steer the Nigeria Police Force through ongoing reforms and intensify efforts to address security challenges across the country.
