The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, and the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, His Excellency Miah Md. Mainul Kabir, have explored avenues for deepening defence cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
The discussions took place on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when the Bangladeshi envoy paid a courtesy visit to the CDS at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
According to an official statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, Oluyede stressed the importance of sustaining and expanding existing areas of defence cooperation between the two countries.
The CDS particularly highlighted military training and professional exchanges as key areas requiring greater attention, noting that enhanced collaboration would help improve the capacity, competence and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Oluyede appreciated the High Commissioner for the visit and expressed confidence that continued engagements between the two countries would produce concrete outcomes and further strengthen their longstanding bilateral relationship.
Earlier, Kabir reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening its relations with Nigeria, expressing his country’s readiness to pursue closer collaboration in key sectors, including agriculture, defence and security.
The High Commissioner said stronger institutional and professional ties between the armed forces of both countries could contribute to addressing emerging security challenges while advancing their mutual interests.
Oluyede also commended the Government and people of Bangladesh for their goodwill and continued commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria.
The engagement underscores renewed efforts by both countries to expand defence and security cooperation, particularly through military training, professional exchanges and capacity development, while leveraging their bilateral relationship to address emerging security challenges.
