The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to making hydrography a national priority as part of efforts to enhance marine navigation, strengthen maritime security and accelerate growth in the blue economy.

The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, MON, gave the assurance while receiving the newly appointed Hydrographer of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA), Rear Admiral O.O. Fadahunsi, and his management team on a courtesy visit in Abuja.

According to an official signed statement by Queeneth Iheoma-Hart, Chief Information Officer, for the Director of Information and Public Relations, the Minister stated that the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s hydrographic capabilities to support efficient maritime operations and data-driven navigation systems.

Dr. Matawalle described the National Hydrographic Agency as a strategic institution in advancing Nigeria’s maritime interests and broader regional objectives within the Gulf of Guinea.

“The NHA plays a strategic role in advancing Nigeria’s and the Gulf of Guinea’s maritime capabilities. By facilitating the sustainable use of ocean resources, promoting maritime trade, and driving economic growth through innovative hydrographic solutions, the Agency is central to our blue economy agenda,” he said.

He noted that discussions during the visit focused on expanding Nigeria’s hydrographic capacity to improve navigational safety, enhance maritime security operations and promote sustainable development within the maritime sector.

The Minister further stated that with existing policy frameworks, Nigeria is well positioned to assume a leadership role in hydrography across West Africa.

In his remarks, Rear Admiral Fadahunsi commended the Minister’s leadership and expressed the Agency’s readiness to collaborate with relevant ministries, departments and agencies to strengthen hydrographic systems and deliver improved operational outcomes.

The visit underscored ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to deepen institutional coordination and leverage hydrographic science for national development, maritime safety and economic expansion.
