The Nigeria Democratic Congress has formally informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of an updated schedule for its congresses, primaries, and national conventions as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated April 15, 2026, addressed to the INEC Chairman, the party explained that the adjustment followed deliberations at its National Executive Committee meeting held on March 25, where an initial draft timetable was considered and adopted. The communication, jointly signed by National Chairman Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe and National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, indicated that the earlier dates previously submitted to the commission were subsequently reviewed in the party’s interest.

The revised timetable shows that activities are already underway, beginning with a nationwide electronic membership registration and mobilisation exercise. The party stated that the e-registration process will conclude at noon on April 29, 2026, with the updated membership register to be submitted to INEC the same day in compliance with the Electoral Act.

According to the schedule, ward congresses across the country will commence on May 1, covering polling units and community levels where applicable. Local government congresses are slated for May 2, followed by state congresses on May 4, while zonal congresses are expected to hold on May 6.

The party has fixed its national convention for May 9, 2026, during which party officials will be elected.

In a separate notification, the NDC also outlined its timetable for party primaries. Primaries for State Houses of Assembly are scheduled for May 22, National Assembly primaries for May 24, and governorship primaries for May 25, 2026.

A concluding national convention to ratify candidates emerging from the primaries has been scheduled for May 29, 2026.

The party urged INEC to deploy officials to monitor all stages of the process, reiterating its commitment to internal democracy and strict adherence to the Electoral Act.

The move underscores the party’s early organisational push as political parties gradually gear up for the 2027 general elections.
