The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has issued a strong warning to political actors against engaging in violence and actions capable of undermining public peace as political activities intensify ahead of party primaries.
Addressing journalists at the end of a high-level security meeting on April 21, 2026, in Lafia, the police commissioner, who spoke on behalf of all security agencies in the state, reaffirmed their collective commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process.
He emphasized that while elections remain the cornerstone of democracy, they must be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere guided by mutual respect and strict adherence to the rule of law. He cautioned politicians across party lines to desist from inflammatory rhetoric and actions that could incite unrest.
“We strongly urge politicians to refrain from actions and utterances capable of inciting violence or disrupting public peace. Political ambition must never outweigh the sanctity of human life or the stability of our communities,” he said.
The commissioner further called on political leaders to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters, warning against violent protests, unlawful rallies, and acts of thuggery. He stressed that security agencies would not tolerate the sponsorship of violence in any form.
“Let me state clearly and unequivocally: security agencies in Nasarawa State will not tolerate any form of politically motivated violence. Any individual or group found instigating, sponsoring, or participating in such acts will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law, regardless of status, position, or political affiliation,” he declared.
He also raised concerns over the spread of hate speech, falsehood, and campaigns of calumny, noting that such practices pose serious threats to democratic stability and public order.
“All political activities must be conducted strictly within the ambit of the law. Political parties and their supporters are advised to obtain the necessary approvals for rallies, comply with established guidelines, and respect the rights of others to assemble and campaign freely without intimidation or harassment,” he added.
Addressing the youth, the police commissioner urged them to resist being used as instruments of violence by unscrupulous individuals, stressing that their future should not be compromised for temporary gains.
“To the youths of Nasarawa State, we urge you to choose peace, uphold the law, and serve as ambassadors of responsible civic engagement,” he said.
He assured residents that security agencies remain united, vigilant, and fully prepared to ensure a secure environment for all, while guaranteeing a level playing field for political parties.
In his closing remarks, the commissioner underscored that sustaining peace is a shared responsibility, calling on politicians, supporters, and community leaders to work together in promoting harmony and stability across the state.
He urged all political actors to lead by example and place the collective interest of Nasarawa State above personal or partisan considerations.
