Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested three suspected illegal gold miners in Borno State as part of efforts to curb illicit mining activities.
The suspects—Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila—were apprehended in Mallam Jakwa Town in Hawul Local Government Area following actionable intelligence on their alleged involvement in illegal mining operations.
According to a statement issued by the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the suspects’ activities are believed to be contributing to insecurity and environmental degradation in the state.
Items recovered from the suspects at the time of arrest include a small gold measuring machine and quantities of mined gold.
The Commission stated that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
