Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, over alleged mutilation of the Nigerian currency.

The arrest was carried out on Tuesday, April 7, following the circulation of a viral video on TikTok in which the suspect was reportedly seen cleaning mucus from her nose with a N500 note.

In a statement issued by the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, the commission disclosed that the suspect was tracked and apprehended after the video attracted widespread attention on social media.

According to the statement, operatives of the anti-graft agency traced Muhammed to the Maiduguri metropolis where she was subsequently arrested.

The EFCC said the suspect is currently in custody at its Maiduguri detention facility while investigations into the incident continue.

The commission added that she will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
