CORPS MARSHAL SPEAKS TOUGH ON ASSAULTS ON PERSONNEL

…vows to continue prosecution of perpetrators

By Nkechi Eze

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists, cautioning them against assaulting FRSC personnel while they carry out their duties. The Corps Marshal emphasized that any motorist found guilty of assaulting FRSC operatives will face prosecution, ensuring the safety and security of the Corps’ officers.

This warning underscores the FRSC’s commitment to protecting the welfare and security of its personnel, enabling them to perform their duties without fear of harm. Motorists are advised to address any grievances through proper legal channels rather than resorting to violence.

The Corps Marshal’s warning to motorists was prompted by a surge in attacks on Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel, who were simply doing their jobs. This warning is particularly timely, given the Corps’ ongoing annual end-of-year special patrol operation, “Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes,” which kicked off on December 15, 2024, and will run until January 15, 2025.

“FRSC operatives are crucial in maintaining road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations across Nigeria. Assaulting them undermines their authority and hinders efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities. By attacking them, individuals not only disrupt the enforcement of traffic laws but also jeopardize the safety of all road users” he said.

He added that to bring an end to the rising cases of assaults, the Corps will leave no stone unturned by ensuring that the law takes it’s due course and anyone apprehended will be dealt with in accordance with extant regulations.

This is because, beyond the administrative penalties imposed by the NRTR 2012, the constitution of the Federal Republic as well as the Criminal Act also prescribes criminal sanctions for assaulting law enforcement officers.

These measures therefore underscore the importance of respecting FRSC personnel and adhering to traffic laws.

Recall that the Corps has manifested commitment to prosecuting individuals who assault its officers, as demonstrated in recent incidents where motorists were apprehended and charged for such offenses.

Motorists must recognize that any complaints or grievances against FRSC personnel should be resolved through established legal mechanisms, rather than resorting to violent confrontations. This approach promotes a safe environment for all road users and maintains the integrity of law enforcement procedures.
