The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, CON, has tasked Federal Controllers of Works across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with ensuring quality road delivery, accountability and improved welfare of Nigerians through effective project supervision.

Umahi gave the charge on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, during the Ministry’s monthly meeting with Federal Controllers of Works at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the progress of federal road projects nationwide, address challenges affecting implementation and strengthen supervision and accountability in the delivery of critical infrastructure.

The Minister urged the Controllers to take personal ownership of projects under their supervision and ensure that contractors adhere to required standards and specifications.

He stressed the importance of continuous professional development, urging the Controllers to deepen their knowledge of construction and remain actively engaged with project sites.

“Take interest in the construction. Read your books to improve. I learn a lot from the site, not from the office,” Umahi said.

He emphasised that effective supervision goes beyond office-based monitoring, urging the Federal Controllers to regularly visit project sites, understand construction realities and maintain close contact with communities affected by federal road projects.

Umahi also called on the officials to put Nigerians at the centre of their responsibilities, noting that the ultimate measure of any federal road project should be its quality and the positive impact it has on citizens.

According to the Minister, genuine commitment to the people would strengthen dedication to public service and inspire officials to go beyond routine responsibilities in ensuring quality project delivery.

“When you put the people first, you are putting God first. You will enjoy your job. You will be happy with the job,” he said.

Reflecting on his experience as Governor of Ebonyi State, Umahi attributed his achievements in office to faith, commitment and a strong sense of responsibility towards the people.

He therefore urged the Controllers to remain diligent, passionate and accountable in the discharge of their duties, stressing that effective supervision was critical to ensuring value for public resources invested in federal road infrastructure.

Umahi’s charge, according to an official statement signed by Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Works (Media), underscores the Ministry’s focus on strengthening project monitoring and ensuring that federal road projects deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
