The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has charged commanders of the Nigerian Navy to ensure that resolutions reached at the 2026 Chief of the Naval Staff Annual Retreat are translated into concrete actions and measurable operational results to strengthen maritime security.
Abbas gave the charge at the closing ceremony of the retreat in Abuja, emphasising that the effectiveness of the strategic engagement would be determined by how well its recommendations were implemented across the Service’s commands and formations.
He stressed that commanders must demonstrate renewed commitment to securing Nigeria’s territorial waters, protecting the nation’s maritime interests and intensifying efforts to combat maritime criminality.
The Naval Chief described the retreat as productive and rewarding, explaining that it provided participants with an opportunity to evaluate the Navy’s operational readiness, identify critical challenges, assess strategic objectives and consider emerging security developments within the country’s maritime domain.
He noted that the deliberations had provided useful insights and strategies that, if effectively implemented, would strengthen the Service’s capacity to respond to evolving maritime threats and improve its overall operational effectiveness.
Abbas also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, for honouring the opening ceremony of the retreat as Special Guest of Honour, acknowledging his support for the strategic engagement.
He equally commended the organising committee and support staff for their dedication, commitment and contributions towards ensuring the successful conduct of the annual retreat.
The CNS urged naval personnel to sustain the spirit of unity, cooperation and collective responsibility demonstrated during the gathering, stressing that the advancement of the Service required the commitment of all officers and ratings to its operational and institutional objectives.
He expressed confidence that the strategies developed and resolutions adopted would provide renewed impetus for the Navy to improve its performance and deliver more effective maritime security operations.
Abbas concluded by urging participants to return to their respective commands with a renewed sense of responsibility and determination to put the retreat’s outcomes into practice. He wished them safe journeys to their destinations and reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s resolve to advance its national security responsibilities through shared commitment and collective effort,
