The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has engaged the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, on funding, institutional reforms, personnel welfare and operational priorities as the Nigeria Police Force intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Elections.
Disu held the discussions on Wednesday during a visit to the Minister, where both officials explored areas of sustained collaboration between the Ministry and the Police Force to strengthen internal security and improve policing operations across the country.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP appreciated the Minister for his continued support to the Force but sought further government intervention in infrastructure development, housing and funding to enhance operational effectiveness.
He also drew attention to pension and welfare concerns affecting serving and retired police personnel, calling for sustained engagement towards addressing the challenges and finding lasting solutions.
On preparations for the 2027 General Elections, Disu briefed the Minister on ongoing personnel training and measures being put in place to address the security needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
He emphasised that sustained institutional support would strengthen the capacity and readiness of police personnel to effectively discharge their election-security responsibilities.
Responding, Gaidam described the visit as timely and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the operational development and reform priorities of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Minister commended the IGP’s efforts and stressed the importance of intelligence-led policing in tackling security challenges, while highlighting government interventions aimed at improving police infrastructure and personnel welfare.
He particularly referenced initiatives relating to pension and insurance arrangements as part of efforts to improve the welfare and overall conditions of service of police personnel.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, welcomed the IGP and his delegation, assuring them of the Ministry’s continued administrative support.
Nlia noted that closer collaboration between the Ministry and the Police Force would help identify priority needs, strengthen service delivery and build public confidence in the Police.
