The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed that only security agencies recognised by the Constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are authorised to participate in security operations during the forthcoming Osun State Governorship Election.
The Force stressed that non-state actors, including the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, vigilante groups and other unauthorised organisations, are barred from performing election-related security duties.
According to the Police, security and law-enforcement responsibilities connected with the election remain the exclusive responsibility of statutory agencies working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.
The NPF warned that no non-state security group or organisation would be allowed to assume or exercise the functions of recognised security agencies during the poll.
It directed such groups to stay away from election security operations and refrain from activities capable of intimidating voters, disrupting the electoral process or undermining public peace and security.
The Police said the restriction forms part of measures aimed at guaranteeing a peaceful, orderly and credible governorship election in Osun State.
The Force also announced plans to impose movement restrictions across the state on election day as part of broader security arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise.
The Osun Governorship Election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with security agencies expected to maintain a strong presence to safeguard voters, electoral officials and election materials.
