The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and China’s state news agency, Xinhua, have explored areas of collaboration in information sharing and media communication to strengthen anti-corruption efforts and deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and China.
The discussions took place when the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, received a delegation from Xinhua News Agency, led by its Deputy President for Africa, Mr. Gui Tao, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to an official statement signed by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications at the ICPC, the meeting focused on potential cooperation in news exchange, professional training, technology transfer and the dissemination of anti-corruption information to wider audiences.
Aliyu described the proposed collaboration as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and support the fight against corruption, particularly illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime.
He noted that the media remained an important instrument for shaping public perception, promoting transparency and mobilising citizens to support anti-corruption initiatives.
The ICPC chairman urged Xinhua to support the Commission’s communication activities through technology transfer and professional training for personnel of its Media and Public Communication Unit.
He explained that improved technical capacity would enhance the Commission’s ability to disseminate information effectively and increase the international visibility of its anti-corruption programmes and achievements.
In his remarks, Gui Tao emphasised the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in promoting international cooperation, noting that corruption was a transnational challenge requiring collaboration across national borders.
He expressed Xinhua’s readiness to work with the ICPC to project Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives and reforms to an international audience, leveraging the agency’s extensive global media network.
Gui Tao also reaffirmed Xinhua’s commitment to providing technical support and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel, adding that the proposed collaboration would be mutually beneficial and anchored on integrity and public accountability.
Xinhua News Agency maintains an extensive international reporting network, including across Africa, where it covers economic development, trade, culture and other aspects of China-Africa relations.
The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen information exchange between the two institutions, improve the professional capacity of ICPC’s media personnel and promote greater international awareness of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
It also presents an opportunity to deepen cooperation between Nigeria and China in media communication, governance and the promotion of transparency and the rule of law.
