Imo Police Detain Six Officers Over Viral Assault Video, Launch Disciplinary Action

The Imo State Police Command has identified and detained six police officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, located in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.

According to an official signed statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Imo State Command, DSP Henry Okoye, the incident occurred on June 22, 2026, and came to the attention of the Command following the circulation of the video on social media.

DSP Okoye disclosed that a prompt review of the footage led to the identification of the officers involved as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu and Corporal Amos Sunny.

Following the identification of the officers, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, psc(+), mnips, ordered a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement noted that the officers have been taken into custody while disciplinary procedures have commenced in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights, stressing that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, unprofessional behaviour and any form of abuse by police personnel.

According to the statement, the conduct displayed by the officers in the viral video does not reflect the values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

CP Bosso assured members of the public that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly, transparently and in line with established procedures.

He further pledged that the outcome of both the investigation and disciplinary process would be made public upon conclusion.

The Imo State Police Command urged residents to remain law-abiding and assured them of its continued commitment to accountability, professionalism and the protection of human rights in the discharge of policing duties.
