Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security and defence cooperation as top security leaders from both countries converged in Abuja for the Fourth Nigeria-United Kingdom Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue.

The high-level engagement brought together key stakeholders from Nigeria’s security and defence architecture, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, as well as senior government and security officials.

The dialogue was co-chaired by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the United Kingdom National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, and focused on strengthening strategic collaboration in addressing emerging security threats while advancing shared national and regional interests.

Discussions centred on enhancing defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, capacity building and coordinated responses to evolving security challenges confronting both countries and the wider region.

The meeting underscored the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, which continues to serve as a critical platform for promoting regional stability, strengthening defence institutions and improving operational effectiveness in tackling complex security threats.

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu’s participation in the dialogue reflects the Nigerian Army’s commitment to fostering stronger collaboration with both domestic and international partners in pursuit of national security objectives.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing transnational security concerns, including terrorism, organised crime and other emerging threats that require collective action and strategic coordination.

As both countries seek to deepen their security partnership, stakeholders expressed confidence that continued collaboration would further enhance capacity development, operational effectiveness and intelligence-driven responses to contemporary security challenges.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to working closely with national and international partners to strengthen security, promote peace and stability, and safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty in line with the Federal Government’s broader security agenda.
