The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd), who died in captivity after being abducted by criminals.
According to an official signed statement by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late senior officer, his colleagues, and all Nigerians over the tragic loss.
The statement noted that Major General Abubakar served the nation with distinction throughout his military career and held several strategic appointments, including serving as spokesman for various military formations and as Director of Defence Information. It added that he made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional development of the Armed Forces, and numerous other national assignments.
The Defence Headquarters described the late officer’s dedication to duty, patriotism, and commitment to Nigeria’s unity as exemplary, stressing that his legacy would continue to inspire serving personnel of the Armed Forces.
Major General Uba disclosed that the military had deliberately refrained from making public comments regarding the abduction in order not to jeopardize ongoing rescue efforts being undertaken by the Armed Forces and other security agencies. He stated that all available operational resources were deployed in a determined effort to secure the retired general’s safe release.
The Defence Headquarters said the unfortunate loss had further strengthened the resolve of the Armed Forces to carry out its constitutional responsibility of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while ensuring the protection of all citizens.
The statement added that ongoing military operations had been intensified in response to the growing threat of abductions and other criminal activities across the country, including the circumstances surrounding the abduction of Major General Abubakar.
DHQ reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling terrorist and criminal networks threatening national security and assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces would not relent in its efforts until lasting peace and security are restored and all perpetrators of terrorism and related crimes are brought to justice.
