The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged Nigerians to take early precautionary measures against the potential effects of El Niño, stressing the need to translate weather warnings into timely action to protect lives, property and livelihoods.
The agency advised citizens to follow official weather and flood alerts, maintain adequate supplies of safe drinking water and reduce strenuous physical activities during the hottest periods of the day.
NEMA also urged Nigerians to pay particular attention to children, older persons and people with existing health conditions, who may be more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
On flood prevention, the agency called on residents to keep drains and waterways clear, avoid dumping refuse or erecting structures on drainage channels, and refrain from driving or walking through floodwater.
The agency further encouraged Nigerians to conserve water during periods of scarcity, noting the importance of responsible water use in preparing for possible shortages.
NEMA also advised farmers to consult relevant agricultural and weather advisories before making major planting decisions to minimise potential losses associated with changing weather patterns.
Emphasising the importance of preparedness, the agency urged citizens to remain informed and respond promptly to official warnings rather than wait until emergencies occur.
“Stay informed. Stay prepared. Act early,” NEMA said in its public advisory.
El Niño is a climate phenomenon associated with changes in sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, which can alter rainfall patterns and temperature conditions in different parts of the world. Its effects vary by region and season, making timely weather information and appropriate preparedness measures essential.
