The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially welcomed a newly appointed National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Manafa (rtd.), following her swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, described the appointment as both strategic and timely, noting that it comes at a crucial stage in the Commission’s electoral timetable.

He explained that the development restores full representation for the North-East geopolitical zone after a prolonged vacancy, strengthening the Commission’s capacity for informed decision-making as preparations intensify for upcoming electoral activities.

The Chairman also underscored the new Commissioner’s diverse professional background in law, military service, and logistics, expressing confidence that her expertise will enhance electoral planning, security coordination, and dispute management within the Commission.

Prof. Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering on its constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing that the Commission remains focused despite prevailing challenges. He noted that preparations are already underway for a series of by-elections and other off-cycle polls ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to him, these interim elections will serve as critical test runs to evaluate and strengthen operational readiness for the Presidential and National Assembly elections slated for January 2027, as well as the Governorship and State Assembly polls scheduled for February of the same year.

He encouraged the new National Commissioner to actively engage in the Commission’s work, collaborate with colleagues, and leverage INEC’s institutional experience to support the delivery of credible, transparent, and inclusive elections.

In her remarks, Rear Admiral Manafa expressed gratitude to the Commission’s leadership for the warm reception, describing her integration as seamless and welcoming.

She acknowledged references to her military career, stating that her experience would be applied to support INEC’s operations effectively.

The new Commissioner also conveyed optimism about contributing to national development and stability through her role, while offering prayers for the success of the Commission’s activities.

“I pray and hope that we are going to work together for the development and stability of this country. In God we stand and in God we serve,” she said, while also praying for the success of forthcoming elections and the safety of electoral personnel and their families.

She concluded by expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve, describing her appointment as an honour.
