The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, on Friday, 9 January 2026, led Service Chiefs, senior military officers and top government officials to the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026 Juma’at Service held at the National Mosque, Abuja.
The solemn service formed part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, a period set aside annually to honour the courage, loyalty and sacrifices of officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces who laid down their lives in defence of the nation’s territorial integrity.
Among the senior military leaders in attendance were the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, NAM; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; and a representative of the Chief of Air Staff. The gathering observed special prayers and moments of reflection in honour of fallen heroes, while also seeking divine guidance and protection for serving personnel across the country.
The Juma’at service provided an opportunity for national thanksgiving and collective remembrance, as prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of departed soldiers, as well as for enduring peace, unity and security in Nigeria. It also served as a moment to celebrate the professionalism, resilience and dedication of serving members of the Armed Forces who continue to safeguard the nation.
Also present at the event were the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulazeez Musa Yar’Adua; heads of security agencies; Principal Staff Officers from Defence and Service Headquarters; and other senior government officials. The high-level attendance underscored the nation’s appreciation of the Armed Forces and reaffirmed the commitment of the government and the Nigerian people to support the military in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day remains a powerful symbol of national gratitude, unity and respect for those who have served and continue to serve in defence of Nigeria.
