The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has inspected about 21 police housing projects across Lagos State, as part of efforts to assess the progress of construction and identify challenges affecting the delivery of accommodation for police personnel.
The inspection took the police leadership to project sites at various stages of development, where stakeholders discussed the challenges responsible for the slow pace of work and the measures required to accelerate the projects.
At some locations, the IGP expressed dissatisfaction with the level of progress, stressing that the welfare of police personnel remains closely linked to effective policing and operational efficiency.
The exercise comes months after several police barracks in Lagos State were cleared to pave the way for reconstruction.
For officers and their families affected by the exercise, the demolition meant more than the loss of existing accommodation. It also disrupted family life, resulted in temporary relocation and, in some cases, created longer journeys between their places of residence and duty posts.
The latest inspection therefore provides an opportunity for the police leadership to assess the state of the reconstruction projects, engage relevant stakeholders and address obstacles delaying their completion.
The IGP’s focus on the projects highlights the importance of decent accommodation in supporting police personnel and creating conditions that enable officers to remain focused on their operational responsibilities.
