The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has joined major opposition political parties at a high-level summit in Abuja, signalling its support for ongoing efforts to forge a stronger political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NDC delegation, led by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, participated in the summit held on Monday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

The gathering, convened by the G-100 with the support of the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, brought together representatives of several opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Action Peoples Movement (APM) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Discussions at the summit centred on strengthening cooperation among opposition parties and developing a coordinated political platform capable of challenging the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

A key proposal from the meeting was the development of a framework for producing a common opposition presidential candidate, with the organisers proposing that the framework be developed within four weeks.

Participants also considered the establishment of standing committees and working groups to coordinate the coalition-building process, formulate a transition programme and advance discussions towards a common presidential candidate.

The NDC’s participation in the summit underscores its willingness to engage in wider consultations on opposition cooperation and the possibility of building a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

The organisers, however, clarified that the initiative was not aimed at dissolving or merging the participating political parties.

They also stressed that no presidential candidate had been asked to withdraw from the 2027 race as part of the ongoing consultations.

The Abuja summit is expected to contribute to a broader round of engagements among opposition parties and political stakeholders as efforts intensify to develop a common strategy for the 2027 general elections.
