The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disowned an AI-generated video circulating on social media that purports to show the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, making statements suggesting partisan political support.
The DHQ described the video as fabricated and said it did not originate from the CDS, warning members of the public to disregard the statements attributed to him.
In a statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters said the video was created through Artificial Intelligence-generated manipulation apparently aimed at deceiving the public and misrepresenting the position of the CDS.
The DHQ said the material was also apparently designed to bring the Armed Forces of Nigeria into disrepute by portraying its leadership as taking partisan political positions.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains a professional, apolitical and non-partisan institution, committed to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the defence of the nation,” the statement said.
The Defence Headquarters condemned the creation and circulation of the fabricated material, warning those behind its production and individuals knowingly amplifying the video to desist forthwith.
It urged members of the public to exercise caution when consuming and sharing digitally manipulated content, particularly materials purporting to feature senior military officials.
The DHQ also advised Nigerians to verify information concerning the Armed Forces through its official communication channels, including its verified social media platforms.
The warning comes amid increasing use of AI-generated and manipulated content to create misleading representations of public officials and institutions.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed the professional and non-partisan character of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and its commitment to the Constitution and the defence of the nation.
