The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has joined other top defence, intelligence and security chiefs at the inaugural meeting of a high-level committee tasked with developing a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a Rolling Five-Year National Strategic Defence and Security Operations Plan.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, followed a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR to establish a coordinated and forward-looking framework for strengthening the country’s national security architecture.

The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume  comprises the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, and heads of intelligence and security agencies.

The Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (Rtd), serves as the committee’s coordinator and will provide the secretariat for its activities.

The committee is expected to leverage the collective expertise of Nigeria’s defence, intelligence and security institutions to assess existing and emerging threats and develop strategic measures for improving national preparedness and security operations.

The initiative is also aimed at enhancing inter-agency coordination and ensuring a proactive response to evolving security challenges confronting the country.
