The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified efforts to strengthen integrity, transparency and accountability within its ranks, with the Service saying its ongoing anti-corruption measures are helping to promote ethical conduct among officers.
The National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, disclosed this on Thursday, August 13, 2026, while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 4th Economic Confidential Lecture and 6th National Spokespersons Awards held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.
The event, organised by Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), was themed, “Anti-Corruption Reforms, Economic Stability and Effective Communication.”
Maiwada said integrity remained a fundamental pillar of the World Customs Organisation, noting that the NCS had aligned its operations with global best practices through integrity perception surveys, continuous institutional reforms and collaboration with anti-corruption agencies.
He said feedback from integrity perception surveys conducted among internal and external stakeholders had continued to shape the Service’s reforms, modernisation projects and partnerships with other government institutions.
Maiwada also disclosed that the Code of Conduct Bureau had recently visited the Service as part of efforts to strengthen ethical conduct among Customs officers.
He said the NCS remained committed to sustaining reforms that would mitigate corruption and improve public confidence in the Service.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Adamu Aliyu, described corruption as a global challenge that distorts economies, fuels inequality and undermines national security.
Aliyu stressed that corruption was not peculiar to Nigeria or Africa, citing international cases to underscore the need for concerted efforts to combat corrupt practices across national boundaries.
The event also highlighted excellence in public communication, with Assistant Superintendent of Customs I Folusho Adeogun, Liaison Officer of the Nigeria Customs Broadcasting Network (NCBN), emerging as the Young Communicator of the Year at the 6th National Spokespersons Awards.
Adeogun, while receiving the award, dedicated the recognition to the Nigeria Customs Service and pledged to contribute further to the growth of the institution through effective communication.
He said the award had encouraged him to do more and remain committed to playing his role effectively within the Service.
Maiwada congratulated Adeogun, describing the recognition as a reflection of the young officer’s commitment, professionalism and hard work.
He said the achievement demonstrated that mentorship could yield results when individuals were willing to learn, improve and apply themselves to their responsibilities.
The jury chairperson, Professor Saudat Abdulbaqi, said the awards had grown beyond an annual recognition programme into a platform for promoting professionalism, effective communication and public trust.
