Nigeria and Canada are deepening cooperation in the digital technology sector following the signing of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and two Canadian technology companies, Goose FL and Fireflies AI.
The agreements were signed in Toronto during the Nigeria-Canada Investment Forum and the Nigeria Investment Economic Conference, in an engagement witnessed by the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.
The partnerships are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy through technology transfer, Artificial Intelligence (AI), financial inclusion and the development of local digital infrastructure.
A key area of the collaboration is the expansion of access to digital financial services, particularly for underserved communities.
Through technology-driven solutions, the partnership is expected to support broader financial inclusion while creating new opportunities for individuals and businesses to participate in the digital economy.
Another major component is the development of local AI infrastructure and services.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to develop, deploy and manage AI technologies domestically, while creating opportunities for local innovators, technology developers and businesses to benefit from the growing global AI ecosystem.
The agreements also seek to promote technology transfer and digital capacity development, enabling Nigerian stakeholders to gain access to international expertise and emerging technological solutions.
The collaboration with Goose FL and Fireflies AI forms part of NITDA’s broader efforts to establish strategic international partnerships that can support the implementation of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
The agency is also seeking to ensure that emerging technologies such as AI are deployed to address practical economic and social challenges rather than remaining limited to technological experimentation.
The partnerships align with the Federal Government’s broader economic transformation agenda and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria’s ambition to grow the Nigerian economy into a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
Digital technology, innovation and human capital development have been identified as important drivers of that ambition, with Nigeria seeking to attract global technology investment while strengthening its domestic capacity to develop and deploy digital solutions.
The Nigeria-Canada engagement also provides an avenue for Nigerian technology institutions and businesses to connect with Canadian companies and the wider global technology ecosystem.
For NITDA, partnerships of this nature are expected to contribute to the development of a stronger and more competitive Nigerian digital economy by combining international expertise with local talent and innovation.
The agreements further highlight the growing importance of AI to Nigeria’s economic development strategy, particularly in areas such as financial services, business automation, digital infrastructure and access to technology.
As Nigeria continues to expand its digital economy, the collaboration with Goose FL and Fireflies AI is expected to provide additional opportunities for technology transfer, innovation and skills development.
