The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hon. Mrs. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, has urged Nigerian youths to move beyond being beneficiaries of democracy and become active stakeholders in the country’s democratic development.
Omidiran made the call in her goodwill message delivered by the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State at the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Peter Eze, during the 2026 International Youth Day (IYD) programme organised by the Nigeria Youth Organization in Abuja.
The programme was held with the theme, “The Role of Nigerian Youth in Consolidating the Gains of Democracy in Nigeria.”
In her message, the FCC Chairman challenged young Nigerians to embrace their responsibilities as active citizens and custodians of the nation’s democratic future, stressing that meaningful youth participation remains critical to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
She called on youths to reject hate speech, misinformation and political violence, while promoting constructive engagement, accountability, innovation, tolerance and peaceful participation in the democratic process.
According to her, the future of Nigeria belongs to all citizens, but the youths, by virtue of their population, energy and potential, must remain at the forefront of shaping the nation’s future.
Omidiran emphasised that an informed, responsible and actively engaged youth population would contribute significantly to building a stronger, more peaceful and democratic Nigeria.
She therefore encouraged Nigerian youths to use their voices and talents positively, participate constructively in civic and political activities, and uphold the values necessary for the consolidation of democracy in the country.
