The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

The feat followed a successful third-party audit of NiMet’s products and services provided to the aviation industry at the three airports by Certech Inc., Canada.

The audit, which lasted from July 20 to 23, 2026, assessed the agency’s services against the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard and found them to be in conformity with the prescribed requirements.

The certification is in line with the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain improvements in Nigeria’s rating by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

NiMet was also successfully recertified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard for its services at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Enugu International Airport; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

The latest certification brings to eight the number of Nigerian international airports where NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological services have achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification.

The certification covers Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport; Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri; and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as well as Osubi Airport.

According to Certech Inc., the certification agency, the audit objectives were achieved following a systematic process audit that placed emphasis on risks and objectives in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

In a July 26, 2026 letter to Professor Anosike, signed by Frank Strohmeier, Lead Auditor and Director at Certech, the agency stated that the audit resulted in the issuance of a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to ISO 9001:2015 requirements for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.

The certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits scheduled to sustain compliance until the next recertification in 2029.

Speaking on the development, Professor Anosike said NiMet was excited by the achievement, attributing the success to the efforts of the agency’s Quality Management System team led by Rotimi Adenubi.

“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he said.

The certification of the aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri is particularly significant as it marked the first time the agency’s AeroMet products and services at the three airports underwent the ISO 9001:2015 certification audit.
