The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s clean transportation agenda by strengthening the safety, regulatory and enforcement framework for the nationwide adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
According to an official statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made the commitment while delivering a keynote address at the 3rd Nigeria Auto Industry Summit (NAISU) held on Thursday at the Radisson Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
The summit, organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), was themed “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration” and brought together policymakers, regulators, automobile manufacturers, energy experts and other industry stakeholders.
Presenting a paper titled “The Safety of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicles on Nigerian Roads,” the Corps Marshal said the reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, have positioned Nigeria to embrace cleaner, safer and more affordable transportation while promoting economic growth and environmental sustainability.
He stressed that the success of the clean mobility initiative depends on a robust road safety system anchored on effective regulation, technical standards, public education and emergency preparedness.
Shehu Mohammed explained that the FRSC has aligned its operations with the Federal Government’s clean energy transportation policy by strengthening inspection protocols for CNG-powered and converted vehicles, enhancing emergency response capabilities, improving crash reporting through the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) and intensifying public enlightenment campaigns on the safe use of emerging vehicle technologies.
The Corps Marshal disclosed that the Corps is working closely with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive framework for the safe deployment of EVs and CNG vehicles across the country.
He said the collaboration includes the operationalisation of the National Gas Vehicle Management System (NGVMS), development of standard operating procedures, coordinated vehicle inspections, emergency response protocols, dedicated EV and CNG number plates, structured data sharing and sustained public awareness campaigns. He also highlighted the functionalities of the FRSC Mobile Application, designed to assist motorists in adapting to Nigeria’s evolving mobility landscape.
The FRSC boss further revealed that the Corps is supporting the pilot deployment of Electric Vehicles in Abuja while ensuring that both converted and factory-built CNG vehicles comply with approved safety standards. He noted that periodic inspections, certification of conversion centres, specialised training for emergency responders and continuous stakeholder engagement remain central to achieving a safe transition to cleaner transportation.
While highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of EVs and CNG vehicles, Shehu Mohammed urged vehicle owners, transport operators, conversion centres and industry players to adhere strictly to approved safety standards, insisting that public safety must remain the foundation of Nigeria’s clean mobility drive.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, for what he described as visionary leadership in advancing the country’s clean energy transition, saying the administration’s investments in alternative fuel transportation would reduce transport costs, improve energy security, create jobs, stimulate local automotive development and position Nigeria among leading nations embracing sustainable mobility.
The Corps Marshal assured Nigerians that the FRSC would continue to provide the technical leadership, regulatory oversight and operational support required to ensure the successful implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda on clean transportation.
