The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, GCOR, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to promoting youth development, national unity and peace through sports, describing athletic engagement as a critical non-kinetic strategy for strengthening national security.
According to an official statement signed by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the maiden CDS Under-19 Open Badminton Championship and Super Series held on 26 July 2026 in Abuja. He was represented at the event by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye.
General Oluyede commended the Mambilla Barracks Badminton Club (MBBC) for partnering with the Defence Headquarters to organise the championship, describing the collaboration as a demonstration of a shared commitment to discovering and nurturing young sporting talents while contributing to national development.
The CDS noted that although military operations remain central to safeguarding the nation, non-kinetic initiatives such as sports are equally important in fostering discipline, resilience and responsible citizenship among young Nigerians.
He said sports promote teamwork, respect for rules, healthy competition and other values that are essential for building a peaceful and united society.
General Oluyede explained that the Under-19 championship was deliberately introduced to identify and develop the next generation of badminton players capable of representing Nigeria at continental and global competitions.
He also highlighted the significance of the Super Series, noting that it was designed to honour veteran badminton players whose dedication, mentorship and commitment have contributed significantly to the growth of the sport in Nigeria. He praised the veterans for inspiring younger athletes and helping to sustain the country’s badminton development.
Reflecting on the competition, the CDS expressed satisfaction with the standard of play, saying the championship had achieved its objectives by showcasing exceptional talent, determination, tactical discipline and sportsmanship among participants.
He observed that the tournament also exposed young athletes to the realities of competitive sports, where both victories and setbacks serve as valuable experiences in character development.
General Oluyede further commended the organising committee for successfully hosting the championship, which attracted participants from 19 states across the federation.
He assured stakeholders that the Defence Headquarters would continue to support initiatives that utilise sports as a platform for youth empowerment, national cohesion and the promotion of peace and security across the country.
The CDS also appreciated the athletes, coaches, officials, parents, sponsors and supporters for their contributions to the success of the maiden championship, expressing confidence that many of the participants would develop into future national stars capable of representing Nigeria with distinction on the continental and international stage.
He congratulated the winners on their performances and encouraged those who did not emerge victorious to remain committed to their development, stressing that every champion begins as a learner. General Oluyede also commended the badminton community, participating clubs, coaches and officials for their collective efforts in identifying, nurturing and developing the next generation of badminton talent in Nigeria.
