The Nigeria Police Force has concluded a two-week intensive capacity-building programme for 55 personnel of its Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), equipping them with advanced intelligence and tactical combat skills to strengthen the country’s counter-terrorism operations.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, the training, conducted in collaboration with the British High Commission, ended at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The graduation ceremony was attended by the Deputy Head of the British Defence Staff West Africa, Colonel Richard Hoyobe, who represented the British High Commission, alongside the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, AIG Akoh Gabriel, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, CTU, DCP Maina Mamman.
The programme certified participating officers in advanced Intelligence and Close Quarter Battle (CQB) courses, with emphasis on tactical operational planning and practical room clearance techniques considered critical to modern counter-terrorism operations.
Representing the Inspector-General of Police, AIG Gabriel commended the British High Commission for its sustained support in enhancing Nigeria’s national security architecture, noting that the partnership has continued to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force in addressing evolving security threats.
He disclosed that more than 140 CTU operatives have benefited from British-supported training initiatives in recent months, including 30 officers trained in Côte d’Ivoire and another 110 personnel trained locally in intelligence gathering and tactical combat skills.
AIG Gabriel urged the newly certified officers to apply their knowledge professionally in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes, while maintaining strict adherence to human rights and the highest standards of policing.
He also praised the Inspector-General of Police for prioritising personnel development and capacity building, describing the initiative as a reflection of the Force’s commitment to improving operational effectiveness.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to the participants, formally recognising them as certified Intelligence Analysts and Tactical Close Quarter Combatants.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to continuous training and professional development of its personnel as part of efforts to enhance public safety and national security.
