The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has charged newly promoted senior police officers to provide exemplary leadership anchored on integrity, professionalism and compassion as they assume greater responsibilities in the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the decoration ceremony of 13 newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and 17 newly promoted Commissioners of Police held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, the IGP described the promotion as a recognition of years of dedication, resilience and meritorious service.
He congratulated the officers on their elevation, noting that the promotions reflected the Force’s commitment to a system that rewards merit, competence and performance. He said their new ranks represented not only recognition for past achievements but also a vote of confidence in their ability to provide effective leadership in the future.
The IGP acknowledged the enormous sacrifices made by police personnel in the line of duty, including prolonged separation from their families, demanding operational conditions and the burden of meeting public expectations. He said the institution recognised these sacrifices and remained committed to supporting its personnel.
He urged the newly promoted officers to demonstrate uncompromising integrity in the discharge of their duties, warning against misconduct, abuse of office and corruption. At the same time, he called on them to lead with empathy by prioritising the welfare of officers under their command.
According to him, leadership is measured not only by discipline but also by the ability to protect, motivate and inspire subordinates, stressing that a police force that cares for its personnel is one they will willingly defend.
The Inspector-General also reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to building a modern, intelligence-led and technology-driven policing system focused on improving public safety and strengthening citizens’ confidence in law enforcement. He emphasised that public trust remains critical to effective policing, noting that confidence in the police often determines whether vital information is shared to prevent crime.
Disu further assured the senior officers of the Force’s continued commitment to their welfare, training and professional development, while encouraging them to mentor younger officers with honesty, patience and dedication to help build a stronger institution.
The IGP also paid tribute to the families of the promoted officers, acknowledging their sacrifices and unwavering support throughout the officers’ careers. He said the promotions were equally a recognition of the families’ resilience and commitment.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his continued support for the Nigeria Police Force. He also commended the Chairman and members of the Police Service Commission for sustaining a promotion process that is transparent, fair and credible.
Addressing the newly decorated Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police, IGP Disu urged them to wear their new ranks with humility and pride while serving as worthy role models for younger officers aspiring to rise through the ranks.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to building a professional, disciplined and accountable institution dedicated to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians.
