The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) says it is closely monitoring recent developments in Belfast, Northern Ireland, following reports of unrest and isolated incidents affecting parts of the community.
In an official signed statement by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols of the Commission, Mr. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed concern over the situation and called for restraint and unity among affected communities.
She noted that moments of tension should not be allowed to deepen divisions, stressing the need for peace, dialogue and mutual respect.
“Whenever communities experience moments of tension, it is important that we do not allow isolated incidents to divide us, but rather strengthen our commitment to peace, dialogue, and mutual respect,” she said.
The Commission extended its thoughts to individuals and families affected by the disturbances, while urging all parties to remain calm and respect law and order. It also commended community leaders and organisations working to promote unity and responsible engagement across different groups.
NIDCOM further acknowledged ongoing appeals for cooperation with law enforcement authorities and encouraged actions that discourage division and escalation within the community.
The statement also referenced comments by a Nigerian community leader in Northern Ireland, Mr. Jahswill Emmanuel, founder of Multi-Ethnic Sports and Cultures Northern Ireland (MSCNI), who expressed sadness over the unrest and extended condolences to victims and their families.
He called for unity among migrant communities, including Nigerians, noting their continued contribution to the stability and development of Northern Ireland, and emphasised the importance of working with law enforcement agencies to prevent further escalation.
NIDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, dignity and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, urging residents to avoid actions or statements that could heighten tensions while promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
The Commission stated that it will continue to engage relevant stakeholders and closely monitor the situation in the interest of Nigerians abroad.
