The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, for his commitment to promoting digital literacy and expanding opportunities for girls in technology-related fields across the country.
In a post shared on its official social media platform, the Commission highlighted the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to encourage greater participation of young girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), describing such initiatives as crucial to building an inclusive digital future.
As part of activities marking the 2026 National Girls in ICT Programme, the NCC hosted 185 female students drawn from various states of the federation on an educational visit to the National Communications Museum in Abuja.
The Commission explained that the excursion was designed to expose the students to Nigeria’s rich telecommunications history while providing a deeper understanding of how communication technologies have evolved over time. It noted that the experience was intended to inspire the participants to explore opportunities in technology, innovation, and digital entrepreneurship.
According to the NCC, introducing young girls to the nation’s communications heritage is a strategic way of stimulating interest in ICT and equipping them with the motivation needed to contribute to Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
The Commission further stated that the programme reflects a broader commitment by government and industry stakeholders to bridge the gender divide in technology, foster digital inclusion, and empower more girls to pursue careers in STEM-related disciplines.
The National Girls in ICT Programme remains a key platform for nurturing future female innovators and technology leaders, with stakeholders expressing confidence that such interventions will strengthen Nigeria’s talent pipeline and support the country’s digital transformation agenda.
