The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has rejected allegations suggesting political undertones in the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, insisting that his custody is strictly in line with judicial procedures and unmet bail requirements.
The Commission maintained that El-Rufai remains in custody because he has not fulfilled the conditions attached to the bail granted by a competent court, stressing that it is fully complying with legal directives and not acting in violation of any court order.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, ICPC spokesperson, J. Okor Odey, said the Commission operates strictly within the ambit of the law and does not engage in political activities or affiliations.
Odey emphasised that the ICPC is a statutory anti-corruption body with no political interest, adding that suggestions of political targeting were unfounded.
According to him, El-Rufai is currently facing trial following his arraignment in court, noting that the matter is purely judicial and must not be politicised.
He added that the court itself had cautioned against politicising the proceedings, reiterating that the case remains within the legal domain.
Responding to allegations that the former governor was being selectively targeted, Odey dismissed such claims, stating that the Commission does not operate on political considerations and is not aware of individuals’ party affiliations.
On concerns raised over El-Rufai’s access to medical care while in custody, the ICPC spokesperson said the former governor has been granted access to medical attention and has been allowed to consult doctors of his choice, in addition to the Commission’s in-house medical services.
Odey further clarified that the continued detention of the former governor is solely due to his inability to meet the bail conditions set by the court, adding that he would be released immediately once the requirements are satisfied.
He also dismissed reports alleging that the Commission had disobeyed a court order, describing such claims as misleading and inaccurate.
The ICPC reaffirmed its commitment to due process, stating that all actions taken in the matter are guided strictly by the law and judicial directives, and urged the public to disregard what it described as politically motivated narratives surrounding the case.
