Nigeria and the United States of America have inaugurated the Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups in Abuja under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, in a move aimed at strengthening joint efforts to combat terrorism, insecurity, and regional instability.
According to an official signed statement by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the initiative underscores renewed bilateral commitment to enhancing institutional capacity and advancing coordinated security responses to emerging threats.
Speaking at the inauguration, the head of the United States delegation, Mr. Cate Dave, stated that the establishment of the working groups is designed to support strategic planning and reinforce institutional frameworks necessary for effective counterterrorism operations. He emphasised that strengthening defence institutions remains critical to denying terrorist groups safe havens and ensuring sustainable security outcomes.
On his part, the leader of the Nigerian delegation, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, highlighted the significance of the partnership in addressing evolving security challenges within Nigeria and across the region. He noted that key priorities of the collaboration include enhancing the warfighting capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and improving operational responsiveness to restore lasting peace and stability.
Both delegations stressed the importance of achieving practical outcomes through the working groups, underscoring the need for accountability, sustained engagement, and mutual commitment to advancing regional security and stability.
