Residents of Owerri West Local Government Area in Imo State are preparing for a major celebration on Easter Monday as the people of Ihiagwa Kingdom and the wider Owerri West community set to honour one of their prominent sons, Hon. Chief Barr. Prince Victor Chinemerem Muruako.

The highly anticipated homecoming reception is expected to attract political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society actors and community stakeholders from across the country, all gathering to celebrate a leader whose record in public service has earned admiration locally and nationally.

Community leaders say the reception is organised in recognition of Muruako’s contributions to public service and his role in strengthening fiscal accountability and governance in Nigeria.

The Fiscal Responsibility Commission had previously faced uncertainty following recommendations by the Steve Oronsaye Committee in 2014 that proposed the restructuring or scrapping of several federal agencies. However, under Muruako’s leadership, the agency has been strengthened and repositioned to play a more active role in monitoring government finances and promoting accountability.

One of his major reforms was the development of a standardized template for calculating operating surplus among government agencies, a move that has significantly improved remittances to the Consolidated Revenue Fund and boosted national revenue.

His tenure has also increased the commission’s engagement with global and development partners such as the International Monetary Fund and United States Agency for International Development, among others, enhancing Nigeria’s participation in international fiscal governance discussions.

Within the commission, Muruako has been credited with prioritising staff welfare and professional development. His leadership has facilitated multiple training programmes and career advancement opportunities for employees, including several promotion exercises widely regarded as exceptional within a short period.

Observers also point to his strategic engagement with key institutions such as the National Assembly of Nigeria and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which has helped deepen awareness and implementation of fiscal responsibility principles across government.

Beyond his national role, Muruako’s record in grassroots governance continues to resonate strongly in his home constituency. As former Executive Chairman of Owerri West Local Government Area, he was known for implementing projects in rural infrastructure, healthcare, education, water supply and electrification.

Community stakeholders say his open-door leadership style and inclusive approach helped build strong relationships with traditional rulers, labour groups, women associations and youth organisations across the area.

He is also credited with facilitating employment opportunities for several indigenes of Owerri West within the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, further strengthening his ties with the community.

As preparations intensify for the Easter Monday reception, many residents describe the event as both a homecoming and a recognition of Muruako’s contributions to national development and community advancement.

Organisers say the celebration will highlight the achievements of a public servant widely regarded as an accomplished lawyer, administrator and grassroots leader whose impact continues to be felt both locally and nationally.
