The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr Richard Pheelangwa, has reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in achieving its mandate of protecting lives and safeguarding the nation.

Pheelangwa made the assurance during a visit to the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he met with the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, as part of his ongoing familiarisation tour of the armed services under the Ministry of Defence.

The Permanent Secretary explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening the institutional relationship between the Ministry of Defence and the Air Force by establishing a direct rapport that would enhance collaboration and improve the operational framework of the service.

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to providing the necessary support required for the Air Force to effectively carry out its constitutional responsibilities of defending the country and protecting citizens.

Pheelangwa also commended the Chief of the Air Staff and the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force for their professionalism and dedication to national security. He further acknowledged what he described as the visionary leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the President’s strong commitment to national security continues to guide the strategic direction of the Armed Forces.

In his response, Air Marshal Aneke appreciated the visit and highlighted key areas where support from the Ministry of Defence would further strengthen the operations and welfare of the Nigerian Air Force.

He identified the need for timely approval and release of funds, acquisition of additional helicopters, improved accommodation for personnel, and accelerated infrastructure development as the service continues to expand its operational footprint across the country.

The Chief of the Air Staff also stressed the importance of regularising teaching staff in Air Force schools and medical personnel in Air Force hospitals, noting that addressing these issues would significantly boost morale within the service.

Air Marshal Aneke assured the Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Air Force’s full cooperation with the Ministry of Defence in order to achieve the nation’s defence and security objectives.

Directors from the Ministry of Defence as well as Principal Staff Officers from the Air Force Headquarters were present during the meeting.
