The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening institutional collaboration across the public sector to strengthen transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in Nigeria’s governance system. This resolve was emphasized by the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Barrister Victor Muruako, during a courtesy visit to the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Comptroller Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, at the Service’s headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Strategic Communications, FRC, Bede Anyanwu, the visit formed part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to build strategic partnerships with key government institutions in line with its statutory mandate to promote prudent public finance management and ensure value for money in the use of public resources.
In his remarks, Barr. Muruako commended Comptroller-General Nwakuche for the significant reforms currently underway within the Nigerian Correctional Service, describing them as critical to national development and effective service delivery. He reiterated that the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, established under the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007, remains steadfast in ensuring fiscal prudence across all levels and organs of government.
“The purpose of this visit is not merely about oversight,” Muruako said. “It is about building institutional systems that strengthen financial discipline, prevent waste, enhance transparency, and improve the quality of service delivery to Nigerians. The Fiscal Responsibility Commission remains committed to ensuring that every naira of public funds is judiciously applied for the benefit of citizens.”
The FRC Chairman further emphasized the need for closer collaboration between the Commission and agencies such as the Nigerian Correctional Service to improve non-oil revenue generation. He noted that beyond its core function in justice administration and rehabilitation, the Correctional Service contributes to economic productivity through various vocational and enterprise programmes that engage inmates and support national output.
In his response, Comptroller-General Nwakuche expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the Fiscal Responsibility Commission for its proactive engagement with government agencies in driving fiscal discipline and operational efficiency. He briefed the FRC delegation on ongoing reforms within the Service aimed at strengthening internal revenue mechanisms, improving logistics, and enhancing the welfare of personnel despite financial constraints.
“We recognize the importance of fiscal responsibility in achieving our mandate,” the Comptroller-General stated. “The Nigerian Correctional Service is determined to uphold the principles of accountability and efficient resource utilization in line with the objectives championed by the Fiscal Responsibility Commission.”
The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register by Barr. Muruako, followed by a group photograph with senior management officers of the NCS. Both parties expressed optimism that the engagement would pave the way for sustained collaboration in promoting fiscal discipline, institutional efficiency, and sustainable national development.
