…emphasizes unity in addressing regional security concerns

By Nkechi Eze

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has taken the reins as Chairman of the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF), stressing the importance of African-led solutions to tackle the continent’s security challenges. The AAAF, a non-political organization, aims to boost airpower capabilities and foster cooperation among African nations.

AVM Olusola F Akinboyewa, Director Public Relations and Information, in a statement signed Tuesday and made available to NAF correspondents, disclosed that at the African Air Chiefs’ Symposium recently held in Zambia, Abubakar emphasized the need for regional collaboration and strategic partnerships to enhance African airpower and address common threats. This move is expected to promote unity and cooperation among African air forces, ultimately contributing to the continent’s stability and security.

Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the importance of collaboration among African Air Forces to address pressing security concerns like terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crime. He also highlighted the value of strategic partnerships with allied nations and international organizations in enhancing capacity, interoperability, and technological innovation in aerospace operations.

According to Abubakar, the African Air Chiefs Symposium is a demonstration of commitment to a safer, more secure, and prosperous Africa, going beyond just a meeting of minds. The symposium aims to foster effective military relationships, networking, and collaboration among participating nations, while also discussing strategic airlift, sharing best practices, and addressing topical issues like women, peace, and security.

Adding that “Our collaboration is a powerful reminder of the importance of finding African solutions to African problems.”

Highlighting the key priorities for his tenure, the new AAAF Chairman disclosed that full operationalization of the Association and the enhancement of Africa-led Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) operations are on the front burner.

While assuring members of Nigeria’s commitment to delivering a successful African Air Chiefs’ Symposium in 2026, Air Marshal Abubakar called for renewed commitment from all member states, stressing that unity and cooperation remain critical to achieving the Association’s objectives.

The Nigerian Air Force’s growing influence in the region is highlighted by the appointment of its Chief of Air Staff as Chairman of the African Air Chiefs Association. This leadership role is further solidified by the NAF’s selection to host the 4th African Air Forces Forum, following the resounding success of the 3rd edition in Abuja in 2024.

This marks a significant record, as Nigeria will be the first nation to host 2 consecutive editions of the event. Scheduled to take place in Lagos from 21 to 23 May 2025, the 4th AAF will centre around the theme “Strengthening Collaborations in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security.”

The decision by the organizers, Great Minds Events Management LLC, to once again entrust the NAF as host underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in regional airpower discussions and the NAF’s demonstrated capability in facilitating high-level engagements. The AAF will bring together key stakeholders, including Air Chiefs, defence experts, and industry leaders, to explore cutting-edge advancements in aerospace technology and their role in bolstering security across Africa.
