The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a nationwide operation, dubbed Operation Whirlwind, to combat the illicit trade of petroleum products. Led by CGC Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS has seized approximately 200,000 litres of smuggled fuel in Adamawa State, dealing a significant blow to economic saboteurs.
Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi has strongly condemned the ongoing efforts of smugglers to undermine Nigeria’s energy sector, labeling their actions as a direct attack on the nation’s economy. This statement comes as part of the latest developments in Yola, highlighting the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to combating economic sabotage.
Intelligence-driven operations conducted by Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers in the Adamawa/Taraba Command have resulted in the seizure of 199,495 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of the NCS’s efforts to combat smuggling and protect the country’s economy.
Elaborating on the methods employed by smugglers. He reveled that; “The smuggling operations involve clandestine methods, including:
Night-time river crossings at Dasin Waterways, secret storage facilities near border towns and hiding products in unlicensed retail outlets.
“These economic saboteurs are determined to inflict hardship on law-abiding Nigerians, but let it be clearly understood that the Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in its mandate to protect our national economy,” he said.
Customs operatives carried out targeted interceptions at strategic smuggling routes, including Mova, Dasin, the Galamba-Song axis, and the Mubi-Maiha corridor.
The CGC nonetheless reassured Nigerians that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) will continue to evolve its approach to combat smuggling. This includes bolstering intelligence gathering, collaborating with security agencies, and leaving no stone unturned to apprehend smugglers.
Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, ACG Hussain Ejibunu, wrapped up his remarks by commending the CGC’s exceptional leadership and the officers’ tireless efforts. He emphasized the vital role public cooperation plays in combating smuggling, encouraging citizens to report any suspicious activities to security agencies, thereby contributing to a safer and more secure environment.
