The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently attached to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos, Plateau State.
According to an official statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, the Army is aware of reports circulating online concerning the alleged incident and has initiated appropriate steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the matter.
The Army said it takes allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness, stressing that the ongoing investigation would be conducted in line with due process and applicable laws.
It, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions on the culpability or otherwise of the officer while the investigation is still ongoing, noting that it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments at this stage.
The statement said relevant civil authorities are also looking into the matter, assuring that the Nigerian Army would cooperate fully with them to ensure that the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated.
According to the Army, its commitment to discipline, professionalism and respect for human dignity remains unwavering, adding that any personnel found to have acted contrary to the law or established service regulations would be dealt with appropriately upon conclusion of the investigation.
The Army further urged members of the public to refrain from speculation, spreading unverified information or taking actions capable of prejudicing the investigation or compromising the privacy and wellbeing of those involved, particularly any minor.
It added that further information would be made available as appropriate, subject to legal requirements and the integrity of the investigative process.
