The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in collaboration with the Nigerian Embassy, has secured the release of Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius, with the affected citizens now on their way back home.
According to an official statement signed by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Commission’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy had formally engaged the relevant authorities in Mauritius to facilitate the girls’ release and ensure accountability over the incident.
The statement disclosed that the girls were safely released in Nairobi and are currently en route to Nigeria.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed appreciation for the efforts that led to their release and said the Commission remains in close contact with the Nigerian Embassy to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents involving Nigerian citizens abroad.
She also expressed empathy for the affected girls and said the Commission hopes they will be willing to share their experiences upon their return to help shape appropriate follow-up actions and support measures.
The NiDCOM Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to the welfare, safety and protection of Nigerians wherever they reside, stressing that safeguarding the interests of citizens in the diaspora remains a priority in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Commission assured Nigerians that it would continue working with the country’s diplomatic missions and relevant authorities to protect the rights and well-being of citizens living and travelling abroad.
