The Nigeria Police Force has concluded the final phase of a Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD) Curriculum Development Workshop aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of its Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Command to effectively prevent, detect, respond to and investigate CBRN and explosive threats.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the workshop was held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on July 23, 2026, in strategic partnership with the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The event brought together high-level delegations, including the DTRA team led by Major Brittany Brown, the ONSA delegation headed by Mrs. Pamela West, and the Nigeria Police EOD-CBRN Command led by Commissioner of Police Hauwa Ibrahim.
The workshop marked the culmination of an intensive Train-the-Trainers initiative designed to institutionalize specialized C-WMD knowledge within the Force and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to address emerging threats involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive materials.
Declaring the workshop open on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, DIG Umar Shehu Nadada, psc, mni, described the initiative as a critical investment in the Force’s operational readiness.
He noted that the evolving nature of weapons of mass destruction requires proactive policing, continuous operational training and stronger collaboration among security agencies and international partners. He added that the programme would further enhance the Police Force’s ability to safeguard lives, protect critical national infrastructure and strengthen Nigeria’s overall security architecture.
DIG Nadada also conveyed the Inspector-General’s appreciation to the DTRA and ONSA for their sustained support and urged participants to uphold professionalism while transferring the knowledge acquired during the training to other personnel across the Force.
In her vote of thanks, Commissioner of Police Hauwa Ibrahim commended the DTRA and ONSA for supporting the development of the curriculum. She reaffirmed the EOD-CBRN Command’s commitment to integrating the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction framework into standard police training programmes and advocated continued collaboration in specialized equipment acquisition, technical assistance and advanced capacity building.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening specialized operational capabilities through sustained inter-agency cooperation and international partnerships in line with global best practices.
