The Federal Government has unveiled plans to transform the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) into a centre of excellence for specialised military and civilian education, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the institution’s infrastructure, academic capacity and technological capabilities.

According to an official statement signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) disclosed this while receiving members of the University’s Governing Council at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The Minister described the university as a strategic national asset that will play a pivotal role in developing the highly skilled workforce required to tackle evolving security challenges and support Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

General Musa said the Ministry of Defence would work closely with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to ensure the full utilisation of the 30 per cent admission quota reserved for military personnel, noting that the initiative would help bridge critical technical and operational skill gaps across the nation’s security sector.

He encouraged personnel of the Armed Forces, staff of the Ministry of Defence and members of the public to take advantage of the university’s cutting-edge academic and technological programmes to acquire specialised knowledge relevant to contemporary national development.

As part of the planned transformation, the Minister and the University’s Governing Council agreed to accelerate the development of key infrastructure on the campus. The proposed projects include the construction of a state-of-the-art Centre for Military Performance Management, which is expected to be the first facility of its kind in Africa.

General Musa also assured the university of the Federal Government’s sustained strategic support, stressing that investment in military education and research remains essential to strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Pioneer Pro-Chancellor of the Nigerian Army University Biu, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd) commended the Minister for his strategic leadership and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s defence architecture.

Lieutenant General Buratai also expressed appreciation for the Minister’s continued support for the Armed Forces and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence, research and national service.
