The renewed commitment was made when the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, received the Country Representative of the World Food Programme in Nigeria, Ms. Katrien Ghoos, who presented her Letter of Commission during a meeting held on Wednesday.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to review the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the World Food Programme, particularly in the areas of food security, humanitarian response, nutrition, resilience-building and sustainable development.
During the audience, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended the World Food Programme for its sustained support to Nigeria, especially its life-saving interventions for vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian crises.
She acknowledged the Organisation’s critical role in complementing the Federal Government’s efforts to improve food security, strengthen community resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods across the country.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working closely with the World Food Programme and other international partners to tackle the root causes of food insecurity through coordinated humanitarian and development interventions.
She stressed that Nigeria remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships that support national development priorities while ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the assistance they require.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu also underscored the need to integrate humanitarian interventions with long-term development strategies aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, improving rural livelihoods, promoting economic inclusion and strengthening resilience against climate-related and other emerging challenges.
Speaking during the meeting, the World Food Programme Country Representative, Ms. Katrien Ghoos, reaffirmed the Organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to achieve food security and sustainable development through continued collaboration with the Federal Government.
