The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has distributed relief materials to victims affected by farmers-herders clashes and communal crises across eight Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State as part of efforts to alleviate their suffering and support ongoing humanitarian interventions.

The relief materials were handed over on June 19, 2026, at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Shabu, Lafia Local Government Area, where affected persons displaced by the crises are currently being sheltered.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by the Acting Director of the Agency’s North Central Zonal Office, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad, conveyed the sympathy of the Federal Government and NEMA to the government and people of Nasarawa State over the unfortunate incidents.

He explained that the intervention was designed to provide immediate relief to victims and complement the efforts of the Nasarawa State Government in addressing the humanitarian needs of affected communities. He commended the support being extended to the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) by the state government and urged authorities to strengthen proactive disaster management strategies to enhance emergency preparedness and response mechanisms.

Representing Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule at the event, the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr. Emmanuel A. Akabe, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the timely intervention, noting that the relief materials would go a long way in easing the hardship faced by victims.

He described Nasarawa State as one of the states vulnerable to both human-induced and natural disasters and reiterated the administration’s commitment to proactive disaster risk management and effective emergency response. The Deputy Governor also commended NEMA for its continued support to the state in times of need.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, Barr. Benjamin Akwash, lauded NEMA for the intervention and assured that the relief materials would be distributed transparently and strictly to the intended beneficiaries.

He also acknowledged the commitment of Governor Abdullahi Sule and Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe toward strengthening disaster management structures and improving the welfare of affected communities across the state.

The relief items delivered by NEMA included 1,300 bags of parboiled rice, 1,300 bags of beans, 1,300 cartons of spaghetti, 130 cartons of tomato paste, 130 cartons of vegetable oil, 130 cartons of seasoning cubes and 65 bags of iodized salt.

The distribution exercise was witnessed by representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Federal and State Fire Services, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), NASEMA and other key stakeholders involved in disaster management and humanitarian response.

The intervention underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to providing relief and support to communities affected by conflicts and disasters while promoting resilience and recovery among vulnerable populations in Nasarawa State.
