Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have rescued more than 47 persons, mostly women and children, who were held captive by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to an official signed statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the rescue was achieved on June 20, 2026, following sustained offensive operations by troops against ISWAP strongholds in the Lake Chad region.

Captain Goni stated that the success of the operation was made possible by relentless ground and air assaults that exerted significant pressure on the terrorists, forcing them to abandon their positions in disarray. The development created an opportunity for the captives to escape from prolonged detention and regain their freedom.

He disclosed that the rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at a secure location, while humanitarian assistance is being provided in collaboration with relevant agencies to facilitate their rehabilitation and eventual reintegration into society.

The statement noted that the rescue underscores the commitment of Operation HADIN KAI to protecting civilians and securing the release of innocent persons held by terrorist groups, in addition to ongoing efforts aimed at degrading insurgent capabilities across the North East.

The Theatre Command reaffirmed its determination to sustain aggressive operations against terrorist elements, dismantle remaining ISWAP networks and restore lasting peace, security and normalcy across the region.
