By Nkechi Eze

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has charged Superintendents and Chief Superintendents of Police to embrace innovation, strengthen professionalism, and take ownership of ongoing reform initiatives within the Nigeria Police Force as he formally declared closed the Operational Change and Leadership (OCL) Course at the Nigeria Police Institute, Jabi, Abuja.

Addressing participants at the closing ceremony of the five-day programme on Friday, June 5, 2026, the IGP underscored the critical role of effective leadership in addressing contemporary security challenges, stressing that modern policing demands officers who are adaptable, accountable, technologically proficient, and responsive to the evolving expectations of the public.

IGP Disu noted that the rapidly changing security landscape requires police leaders to continuously develop their capacity to manage complex threats while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. He urged the officers to leverage the knowledge and skills acquired during the course to enhance leadership practices, improve operational effectiveness, and strengthen service delivery across their respective Commands and Formations.

The Inspector-General further emphasized the importance of upholding human rights and ethical policing standards, describing them as fundamental pillars for building public trust and confidence in law enforcement institutions. He encouraged the participants to become agents of positive transformation within the Force by fostering a culture of accountability, discipline, and excellence.

According to the IGP, participants must champion intelligence-led policing, evidence-based decision-making, and the adoption of technology-driven strategies to improve crime prevention and law enforcement outcomes. He stressed that innovation and strategic thinking remain essential tools for tackling emerging security threats and ensuring the Force remains responsive to the needs of citizens.

The Operational Change and Leadership Course was designed to strengthen the leadership capacity of middle-level police officers, equipping them with contemporary management skills and operational strategies necessary to support the ongoing transformation agenda of the Nigeria Police Force.

The closing ceremony marked the culmination of an intensive training programme aimed at enhancing leadership competence, operational efficiency, and institutional effectiveness, while reinforcing the Force’s commitment to professional policing and sustainable reforms.
