The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy through enhanced resources, advanced capabilities, and an enabling environment aimed at building a modern, technology-driven force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests.
According to an official signed statement by Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, General Musa made the pledge while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos, the grand finale of a week-long celebration marking seven decades of dedicated service to the nation.
The Defence Minister stated that the future of the Nigerian Navy depends on its ability to harness innovation and emerging technologies, including advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned platforms, cyber defence tools, and data-driven operations to effectively counter evolving maritime security threats.
“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners. A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness, improve operational effectiveness, and contribute significantly to collective security in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” he said.
General Musa commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings, and civilian personnel of the Service for their professionalism, discipline, resilience, and commitment over the past 70 years. He described the Nigerian Navy as a model of organisational excellence and expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s international partners for their continued support in advancing maritime security and regional stability.
He noted that the Navy’s operations have significantly contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy by securing sea lanes, protecting offshore oil and gas installations, and safeguarding other critical maritime assets. He added that the Service has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes.
“Through active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, the Navy has played a vital role in maintaining peace and stability, thereby creating the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development,” he stated.
The Minister also congratulated officers and ratings honoured during the awards ceremony, including those recognised posthumously, for their dedication, professionalism, and sacrifices in service to the nation.
“Their selfless service upholds the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspires future generations. Tonight, we celebrate not only individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of excellence that continues to propel the Service forward,” he remarked.
Highlighting the significance of the Ceremonial Sunset, General Musa described it as one of the most enduring naval traditions globally, symbolising duty, honour, and the seamless transition of responsibility from one watch to another. He noted that the ceremony serves as a reminder that while individual duties may come to an end, the Navy’s vigilance remains constant.
As the Nigerian Navy commemorates its 70th anniversary, the Ministry of Defence joined Nigerians in celebrating the milestone and commended all naval personnel for their unwavering dedication to the security, unity, and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
